Comments on Jitsi Meet

“Instant connection with research groups” Mags Almond, Researcher, Ireland, 2021

“During the lockdown, I used Jitsi to teach Dutch to refugees. Most of my students don’t know much about computers or don’t even own one, so it was great that Jitsi was easy to use on both phones and computers.” Kirsten, Dutch Language Teacher, Netherlands, 2020

“Easy setup, secure and use for online meetings” Researcher and trainer, South Africa, 2020

“I onboarded remotly. Videoconferences were crucial. Also for self-improvement as I took my pilates lessons online.” Kathrin Quilling, Digital Learning Specialist, Germany

Quick Guide to Jitsi Meet

Here you will find basic guidance and links on how to use Jitsi Meet for teaching, training, learning and development.

Jitsi Meet is used not just for web meetings but also for remote training in virtual classrooms. With Jitsi you can

  • share your desktop, presentations, and more
  • invite users to a conference via a simple, custom URL
  • edit documents together using Etherpad
  • pick fun meeting URLs for every meeting
  • trade messages and emojis while you video conference, with integrated chat.

Here’s a video that shows you Jitsi in action

It is important to remember, however, that the key to good virtual meetings is to avoid replicating what you do IRL. In other words ““Don’t replicate or automate, innovate”

  • keep virtual sessions short
  • use visuals other than bullet-point slides
  • ensure the session is highly interactive rather than broadcast delivery
  • make good use of breakout rooms for small group work, see the video below on how to set up breakout room

So how does the open-source Jitsi Meet stand up against Zoom or Google Meet? Take a look at the video below, but overall

“Excellent video quality a better feature list than Google Meet, but not quite up the standard set by Zoom.”
