As a result of the 16th Annual Tools for Learning survey, I have, this year, generated a list of 100 Top Tools for Learning. Why, since last year I produced a list of 300 tools? There are two main reasons for this: firstly, fewer people voted this year, but secondly, and more significantly, far fewer tools were nominated this year.

In fact, it has become clear that whilst 2021 was the year of experimentation – with an explosion of tools being used as people tried out new things, 2022 has been the year of consolidation – with people reverting to their trusty old favourites. In fact, many of the tools that were knocked off their perches in 2021, have now recovered their lost ground this year.

So, with a smaller number of tools on the Top Tools list this year, I decided to drop the separate tools lists for personal learning (PPL), workplace learning (WPL) and education EDU), and instead I have simply indicated where most votes were placed on the list below. Note: this doesn’t mean tools aren’t or can’t be used in other contexts, just that that this was were the majority of people showed they used them. The graphic (in the right-hand column) provides a visual representation of 2022’s Top 100 Tools, and where they are being used.
